Is the cost of independent advocacy services covered by insurance?
Currently, independent patient advocacy services are not covered by insurance. However, the value of personalized, dedicated support can be a critical investment in ensuring you receive the best possible care. Please refer to the next question for further insight.
Why should I hire an independent advocate if my insurance company or local hospital provides advocates at no cost?
While hospital or insurance-provided advocates serve an important role, their priority is often aligned with their employer’s goals. An independent advocate, however, is solely focused on YOU. They are committed to your health, ensuring your needs are met without any external influence. Hiring an independent advocate means having a dedicated ally who will prioritize your well-being and ensure you receive the care and attention you deserve.
Will my doctor be upset if I work with an advocate?
Not at all. Patient advocates work with your doctors, not against them. Our goal is to enhance communication between you, your providers, and even between your providers themselves. By reducing gaps in care and avoiding duplicated efforts, we help create a more streamlined healthcare experience. This not only improves your health outcomes but also boosts compliance, something your doctor will definitely appreciate. In fact, many physicians recognize the value of advocacy and may even recommend it for their patients.
Do you make medical decisions?
No, our role is to empower you to make informed decisions regarding your healthcare. We strive to ensure that you and your loved ones feel confident and supported.
Can you advocate for my elderly parent?
Absolutely! Supporting a loved one can be challenging, especially if you’re balancing work, family, or distance. By hiring an advocate, you can gain peace of mind knowing that your parent’s care is being managed and that you’ll be kept informed every step of the way. (Note: For confidentiality reasons, the person receiving advocacy services must sign consent forms to share their health information with designated individuals, including a financially responsible party if applicable).
What does BCPA stand for?
BCPA stands for Board Certified Patient Advocate. This is the only nationally recognized certification for patient advocates, awarded by the Patient Advocate Certification Board (PACB) to qualified individuals who pass a rigorous examination and adhere to the highest ethical standards, ensuring the protection and well-being of their clients.
Will my health information remain confidential?
Absolutely. In accordance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), your personal health information will only be shared with individuals for whom you have provided written consent (such as your doctors or designated family members). All electronic communication, including email and document sharing, occurs through HIPAA-compliant platforms. Physical records are securely stored in locked file cabinets and are destroyed after our partnership ends to ensure your privacy is fully protected.
Where do you offer services?
Thanks to advancements in technology, we can provide our services to clients across the United States, no matter where you are located. For those in Bakersfield, California, and the surrounding areas, we also offer in-person services to ensure a personal touch in your advocacy journey.
